Nigeria: IMPLEMENT STATE POLICE : STATE ASSEMBLIES TO FG

The Conference of Speakers of State Legislative Assemblies of Nigeria has called on the Federal Government to promptly begin full implementation of community policing and formation of state police as a panacea to the myriad of insecurity issues and spate of kidnappings plaguing the nation.

In a communique read by the Conference Chairman, Abubakar Suleiman, the Federal Government was urged to stand up to its primary responsibility of protection of lives and properties demanding that something must be done to redeem the situation and make Nigerians feel safe and secure.

The conference also set up a committee to review the country’s constitution with the view of contributing to the ongoing amendment debate. The Speakers also appealed to the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) to exercise restraint and patience noting that their protests in recent times across the country has disrupted the legislative process in the state Houses of Assembly. The Speakers Conference assured that a committee has been constituted to engage the association with a view to resolving the lingering issues that led to the industrial action. Recall that PASAN had recently embarked on a natiowide strike action to protest the non-implementation of the financial autonomy Act and Presidential order 10.

The Speakers Conference at the end of its quarterly meeting held in Bauchi on Saturday declared  their admiration for the cordial relationship between the Bauchi State House of Assembly led by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Executive arm led by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stressing that it is the height of political harmony and good governance
